California Governor Jerry Brown recently announced a ban on “unnecessary” travel for staff and said that such spending was unreasonable during the fiscal austerity period.

An administrative directive issued by Brown stated that staff members are prohibited from travelling except for “emergency tasks” and travel without government reimbursement. All state travel needs to be approved by the agency secretary, and out-of-state travel is subject to approval by the governor's office.

Last week, Brown ordered agencies to begin collecting travel expenses and salary advances for employees who were ineffective or unpaid, which is expected to reach $1,330 million.

“The current austerity situation requires us to understand more about how taxpayers pay taxes in state governments,” Brown said in a statement today. “It’s not currently suitable for attending state outreach seminars, business trips, or state Outside field visits, this administrative order will explicitly prohibit these acts."

The governor's office has not yet budgeted for the amount of fiscal expenditure that this directive will save. Brown government spokesman Gil Duran said on the phone today that agencies have not yet found a uniform way to track travel expenses. Whether this travel ban will be applied to the California pension system, Duran said that it is still unable to answer.

Duran said: "It is a tricky task to make clear statistics on past travel expenses."

California Governor Brown is a Democrat who is 73 years old and has worked with lawmakers to reduce the $25.4 billion budget deficit in California to $15 billion by cutting health care, education and other project spending.

Brown has traveled to California, the most populous state in the United States, to persuade the Republican legislators to pass his voting measures, which will increase tax revenues by $110.
