Jetstar, the leading low-cost airline, has opened new routes in several second-tier cities in the past 12 months with the growth of outbound travel in second-tier cities in China.

It is expected that China will become the world's leading source of outbound tourism in the next few years, and outbound tourism in second-tier cities will become the main. According to the Global Tourism Trends Report released at the International Tourism Fair in March, the number of outbound tourists in China will reach 79 million in 2015. This means that China will become the largest outbound travel market. At the same time, Nielsen conducted a survey on China's tourism trends, in which the demand for outbound travel of second-tier cities showed steady growth.

Jetstar Asia is the promoter of Jetstar Group in Asia, providing Singapore direct flights to and from Guilin, Haikou, Hangzhou and Shantou. In addition, Jetstar Asia also operates flights to major destinations such as Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei. Jetstar Asia President Zhuang Bilian said: "By benefiting from the growth of the middle class, rising income levels and simplified visa application process, China Demand for outbound travel continues to rise."

She said: "In China, more direct flights will be a key factor in promoting the growth of outbound travel in second-tier cities."

Ms. Zhuang Bilian cited the Jetstar Asia Haikou/Singapore route as an example to illustrate the growth opportunities for outbound travel in second-tier cities.

“The number of people entering and leaving the Haikou Meilan International Airport in 2010 increased significantly year-on-year, an increase of 43.84% compared with the same period in 2009.”

She also added: "Jiexing opened the Singapore-Haikou route in 2009, and the monthly average attendance rate has been over 80%. So far we have received nearly 40,000 passengers."

For airlines operating in second-tier cities, the destination itself is just one of the factors that attract tourists. Industry experts say that “low price” is also a decisive factor in choosing destinations for second-tier cities.
